INTERIM

In a room within the Kremlin in Moscow, a man is seated at a desk. From the wall opposite Lenin, his predecessor, looks down. The man’s forehead, beneath short dark hair, is furrowed, and his lips are sternly pursed. Before him a map of Russia is spread open. His hand is resting on a paper which contains a list of names.

In the street below, a couple of workers, leaning against a wall, are watching a funeral approaching. The scarlet hearse moves slowly by.

“Why have they shot him?”

The other jerks his head at the Kremlin above:

“Ask Stalin.”
